I have a love of fabrics that goes back
to visiting my grandmother who made everything by hand.
I also learning how to sew from the nuns in Catholic
school. I made doll clothes and then my own clothes when I was a
teenager. Now I mainly construct carry bags as I’m always
carrying stuff and like to have different bags to choose from. I use
tapestry, Indian silks, Chinese fabrics, image transfers onto
muslin, oil cloth from New
Mexico and vintage barkcloth & lace that
I pick up at flea markets and antique stores. I often trade bags
with other artists for their work. As soon as I get an idea, I
get out the sewing machine and start cutting fabric. I made my
latest bag from African mud cloth on the outside and printed bright
print cottons from the Cote
d’Ivoire for the lining. I was just
given a very good quality red silk from my friend. It is a pair of
old pants her mother wore when they lived in
Singapore
about 35 years ago. I want to do this one justice, so I’m working it
out in my mind before cutting into that gorgeous
fabric. HERE
are some of my carry bags and a fibre art choker
necklace.
